This picture was taken in 2008, but that’s about how deep the snow is...and still coming! |
Michigan is under a brilliant blizzard right now. As I waded through snow this morning to take Mikey for his morning romp, two thoughts crossed my mind: (1) I feel like a child again, with snow above my knees, and (2) this is a perfect day for snow cream!
Folks, do not miss this chance to make a special treat with your children, or little ones that you babysit, or even just for the kid in you! Following is our favorite recipe for fast-and-easy Old-time Snow Cream. Enjoy…and stay warm!:-)
Old-Time Snow Cream
1 cup milk
½ cup sugar
Scant ½ tsp vanilla extract
About 3 quarts of CLEAN snow
In large bowl, stir together milk, sugar, and vanilla until blended. Stir in enough snow to make snow cream to an ice cream consistency. Eat and enjoy!
Variations—you can make many substitutions to suit your taste. Try substituting canned cream instead of milk for a heavier flavor. Add chocolate syrup or instant cocoa mix for chocolate snow cream. Try adding plump raisins and cinnamon. Or puree an overripe banana and add to the mixture. Get creative—the sky’s the limit!

I'm kid enough to try.
ReplyDeleteWe had chocolate "ice cream" for lunch. I think I will try a can of sweetened condensed milk, a drop of green food coloring, a drop of mint flavoring, and some mini chocolate chips.
ReplyDeleteAhhhh memories. Back in the dark ages we did not use a recipe. We just scooped up a bowl of snow and added chocolate milk or reg milk and sugar. The best thing about snow cream is that it is fat-free so you can eat as much as you want. Right?
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that you were "kid enough to try," Amy! :-) Mmm, mint chocolate chip sounds good. Perhaps we will have to try that. We certainly aren't lacking for clean snow right now!

I had to laugh at your comment about the "dark ages," Aunt Debbie! It's actually pretty bright around here with all of the blinding snow! If you ever want to make snow cream again, we have plenty to share! :-)
