Memorial Day Festivities: Picnicking!

Though we spent a lot of time working Memorial Day weekend, we did have fun with a couple of picnics! Here are some photos from Sunday and Monday:

We enjoyed a fun picnic at church on Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, the weather was a bit wet and overcast, but we still had a good time!

The young children had a little too much fun playing in the volleyball-turned-mud pit. They were quite dirty by the end of the picnic! J

Sunday night we were rather nervous for awhile because we were under a Tornado Warning and Severe Thunderstorm Warning for a few hours. Our tornado sirens went off several times through the late afternoon. After the terrifying tornados in other parts of the country, we took no chances. So we crashed in our basement and watched a little TV, watched funny youtube videos on the laptop, ate lots of pretzels, and tried to keep all of the animals under control.

Mikey was rather worried about the whole situation. Just kidding, this photo was staged! J Thankfully, the storms passed through very quickly and we had just a few minutes of hard rain and thunder.

Monday was a very different day weather-wise. The temperatures crept up near the 90’s and the humidity was pretty high. But it wasn’t too hot for our annual bonfire! Last year, we had a bonfire on Memorial Day, but we were eating in the garage because it was drizzling a little outside. The weather was perfect this year. The kids even spent the day in our neighbor’s kiddie-pool.

Daddy fired up the grill for some delicious burgers. Yum!

Our delicious spread: cheeseburgers on Kaiser rolls, tortilla chips with hot salsa, sweet watermelon slices, carrot sticks, and spinach, onions, dill pickles, mustard, ketchup, and mayonnaise for the burgers (I of course, had to have everything on my burger. J) It was a good meal!

During our meal, we called my Grandpa and thanked him for fighting in the Korean War. We chatted with him and Grandma for quite awhile. When it was time for dessert, our neighbors came by to roast marshmallows for s’mores. Here the kids try to protect themselves from the smoke and heat while evenly toasting their marshmallows.

Ahh, true summer!

Another couple that lives down the street from us came outside and we invited them to join us for a few s’mores. As I’m sure you can tell, we had a great time celebrating and enjoying some time with neighbors. I hope you all had a great weekend as well, hopefully remembering the true reason behind our celebration!

  2. Yes, it does indeed feel like summer is finally here, Amy! Especially since it's 90 degrees out right now. :-)
