Whatever My Lot

“When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.”

“And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.”

Horatio G. Spafford
(1828-1888)

  1. Do you know the story behind this hymn?

  2. Yes, technoprairie, and it's quite a story, isn't it? I had known about the tragedy at sea that took Horatio Spafford's 4 daughters, but I hadn't known until recently about the prior tragedies in his life...losing his 4-year-old son to scarlet fever, losing all his land holdings in the Chicago fire, and so on. That he could say after all this, "It is well with my soul" fills me with awe! He certainly exhibited a faith and trust in God that transcended all circumstances.
