Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day weekend was filled with labor for our family! Usually we spend the weekend with our Grandparents working around their house, but we’ve been gone so much this summer, we had things that really needed to get done while the weather was good. Here are some snapshots of our busy weekend:

On Friday (September 2), Rubia and I worked on scrubbing all the rails of our wraparound porch.

It was a warm day, but we stayed cool by spraying each other with the hose. Sometimes with the other person’s consent, other times not. J

That evening we enjoyed delicious homemade pizza with a movie. I have really enjoyed making pizza over the summer because I have access to fresh basil, parsley, oregano, peppers, and nasturtium blossoms. It makes for a delicious pizza!

Saturday morning (September 3), Josiah came out and weeded in my garden and squished squash bugs for me. I paid him a penny per bug and/or weed. He was quite happy to make some money!

Meanwhile, Benjamin taped off the porch railings so we could begin painting. Daddy finished caulking the wood before we painted as well.

It was SO HOT that day. The temperatures reached 95 (really, they did, Aunt Debbie!) But thankfully we finished the first coat of paint on all 70 plus feet of railing and posts.

Sunday was spent resting (it was definitely needed! My hamstrings were very sore from squatting up and down painting the railings!) We went back to work on the porch on Monday morning. Lewis explored the tractor while Daddy sharpened the mower blades. Just as an FYI, Lewis’ ear recovered quite nicely and we took him to the Humane Society this week. He checked out healthy and is now up for adoption. Please pray that he will find a good home!

The weather on Monday (September 5, Labor Day), was quite different from Saturday. The temperature was in the 50’s for most of the day. We were bundled up against the cold and enjoyed hot chocolate instead of the orange smoothies we had on Saturday.

My ears started getting cold so I had to pull up my hood. My nose was cold too, but they don’t make nose gloves. J Thankfully, we were able to finish the second coat of paint a little faster than the day before. We finished in about 5 hours.

We were rewarded quite nicely for all our hard work. We enjoyed using the grill one last time to fix grilled chicken. We even ran out of propane, so it was definitely the last time for the summer. Along with the chicken, we ate delicious sweet corn and watermelon from the market, also probably for the last time. L

And for dessert, peach cobbler with homemade vanilla ice cream. It was very delicious!

And that was our Labor-filled weekend! On Tuesday (September 6) we started school, but that’s a topic for another blog post. . .

  1. The difference in temperatures from Saturday to Monday was quite dramatic.

  2. It was indeed dramatic, Amy! It certainly called for a quick change of wardrobe.
