How We Celebrated Halloween

Though it is a rather controversial subject among Christians, our family chooses to participate in Halloween, or as we like to call it, Harvest. We tend to celebrate it differently than most and use the holiday as an opportunity to reach out to our unsaved friends and neighbors.

Our decorations are always “happy” and reflect a harvest theme rather than a scary theme. Here Roma, Rubia, and Josiah pose with our neighbor kids who helped stuff “Harvey.”

We also decorate and carve a “happy” pumpkin. Most of our pumpkins display a message such as “Make a Joyful Noise Unto the Lord,” or “Jesus is Life.”

We’ve never worn scary costumes, and this year was no different. Ben and I chose not to dress up, but Rubia and Roma dressed up as Pepper & Salt. Josiah was an army man.

Zack manning the door for trick-or-treaters. Along with the candy, we handed out gospel tracts to each child that came to the door.

After going to a few neighbors’ houses around our street, we came home and changed into pajamas. Then we enjoyed popcorn and hot chocolate while watching “Mr. Bean’s Holiday.” It was a lot of fun!

And of course we enjoyed a lot of our favorite candies!

In a desire to honor God in everything we do, we try to focus on the spiritual lessons we can learn from Harvest. One of our favorite ways to do this is to read “The Pumpkin Patch Parable” and thank the Lord for how He has transformed our lives.
