Serving with the Youth Group

This past Tuesday night, our youth group had the opportunity to do something out of the ordinary. Since everyone was on Spring Break this week, we weren’t having our regular Wednesday night meeting. Instead, we met together on a Tuesday night to go and help serve dinner at a local shelter.

The shelter we served at specifically serves those who are in rehab programs following addictions (i.e. drugs, alcohol, etc.) They have living areas for people, and also provide food, clothing for interviews, counseling, and a loving Christian atmosphere to try and help people get back on their feet.

About 17 people from our youth group (including some parents and siblings) came out to help. When we arrived, they were having a worship service. We were quite surprised to realize that we knew the couple leading worship. Mr. L’s Mom and Dad own the gift shop/bakery/soda fountain in our little town. We often see members of their family working in the store.

They led us in several worship songs. It was neat to worship with people of all different walks of life. The people we were worshipping alongside didn’t have hardly anything materially in this world. But they found so much joy in worshipping the Lord who is changing their lives!

Then a Pastor who works at the outreach gave a short message before people were dismissed for dinner. That was when our group went into action!

On the menu that evening was a meat, vegetable, and tater-tot casserole, rolls, salad, a banana pudding sort of cake for dessert, cupcakes, and of course drinks. I was initially put on drink duty, but the 2 middle school boys helping did such a good job that I was pulled over to the kitchen to help serve the casserole and rolls.

The twins and Josiah with their friend, K. They were serving the salad and dessert at their station.
The kitchen crew.
We had a lot of fun visiting with the people there. We definitely were among people of all walks of life, but it was very good for all of us to get to serve them. We enjoyed it!
Almost everybody in our group just as we were finishing for the night.

I hope that we can serve like this more often! I think we all enjoyed having the opportunity to serve others and be the hands and feet of Jesus.
