Saying Goodbye to Dad's Airplane

Before we arrived at the going-away party (thrown for us by some dear friends), we had stopped at several airports to post fliers. These fliers were advertising the sale of my Dad’s ¼ share of a Cessna 172. He has been part of this flying club for several years now. But since we’re moving to Texas, he obviously won’t be using the plane that is housed up in mid-Michigan!

We are quite sad to sell the plane, because as Ben said, “We were raised in this plane!” J Many happy hours have been spent in Dad’s plane exploring all over Michigan. On our way home from the going-away party, we stopped by the airport to drop off Dad’s keys and to see the plane one last time.

It was getting rather late, and Mr. and Miss Comic-Relief made another appearance. J These two can get pretty ridiculous when they share seats at the back of the van!
Daddy took pictures of each of us kids in front of his plane to put in some special airplane frames he has at home. Notice the murals on the hanger wall of WWII planes in action.

Me.
All of us kids.
Daddy was rather emotional about the whole thing. J Just kidding, he’s faking in the above picture!
Daddy and Mommy.

After saying goodbye to the plane, we stopped at Wendy’s on the way home. We kids got Frosty’s (the LAST thing some of them needed J) and then we headed home. We were sad to say goodbye to our friends and the airplane, but we’re excited to see what new friends—and yes, what new airplane—God has for us in Texas!

Going-Away Party

This past weekend we had the opportunity of attending a going-away party for a family that is moving to Texas. That family is actually us! J My Dad resigned from the company he has worked for the last 18 years to accept a position at a smaller company in a little town in northeast Texas. We’ve known about this opportunity since July, and we have been praying about it for the past several months, as Mom and Dad visited the area and Dad interviewed at the company.

Dad had also interviewed at several other companies, and we prayed that the Lord would make it very clear where He wanted our family to go. He made it abundantly clear that Texas is His direction for our family right now!

Our transition is seemingly sudden to many of our friends because we will likely be moving this month, or possibly next month, depending on when our house sells. We really wanted to see a lot of our friends here in Michigan one last time, but we knew that we couldn’t possibly host a party while simultaneously trying to show our house as often as possible and otherwise prepare for this move.

We were so excited when a friend of ours offered to host a party for us! We really enjoyed our time visiting friends during the party.

The tables were decorated with a fall theme and some of our favorite candies and nuts.

We had a delicious spread of snack foods like cheese and crackers, cookies, bars, fruit, tea, and apple cider.

Although we were a bit disappointed that some of our friends weren’t able to make it (the party was somewhat impromptu), we had some very encouraging fellowship with lots of dear friends!

The kids had lots of fun playing outdoors since the weather was just perfect.

Even after we had to clean up the party, we stood out in the parking lot talking with more friends! What is my friend Amy taking a picture of?

The gorgeous fall colors across the parking lot! Can anyone tell me if there are fall colors in northern Texas? It is a question that has been bothering me to no end! I have a sad feeling that they don’t. L

After the party we stopped over at a friend’s house to see their new pet bunny.

But “visiting the bunny” quickly turned into an hour-long visit with our dear friends. J

The girls had lots of fun taking pictures together.

Before we left, we just had to get some group pictures.

The grown-ups.

We had a great time visiting with friends! We’re so thankful to have had the opportunity to see them, as we will miss them dearly when we move.

"The Hole in Our Gospel" Book Review

Recently I finished reading a book that was highly recommended to me, called “The Hole in Our Gospel” by Richard Stearns, President of World Vision. The big questions of the book are “What does God expect of us?” and “Is something missing from our understanding of the gospel?” Stearns believes that there is a gaping hole in our gospel; a hole that leaves the poor and suffering outside of the typical Christian’s life. He says that we have simplified the gospel so much, that we have left out critical portions relating to the poor and injustice. One quote from the book says, “In our evangelistic efforts to make the good news accessible and simple to understand, we seem to have boiled it down to a kind of ‘fire insurance’ that one can buy. Then, once the policy is in effect, the sinner can go back to whatever life he was living—of wealth and success, or of poverty and suffering.”

Stearns tells a story of a friend who conducted an experiment. He went through the entire Bible and cut out every passage and verse that dealt with the issues of poverty, wealth, justice, and oppression. By the time he was finished, the book was in tatters. His Bible was literally filled with holes. So whenever we as Americans ignore those issues, we are living out a gospel filled with holes.

Throughout the book, Stearns weaves in his own story of salvation and how he came to World Vision. He had been the CEO of Lenox when he was asked to become a part of WV. He was very resistant at first, and did not at ALL want to accept the position. Eventually He surrendered to God’s clear calling, and continued to be convicted about the way the American Church ignores the plight of millions who are suffering around the world today.

I really enjoyed reading his personal story, because in a way it felt similar to my own surrender to God’s calling to build an orphanage in Haiti. I fought it so long, but God has made it abundantly clear that this is what I’m called to do. In order for God to use me—and you—we have to be surrendered to His will for our lives.

The third section of the book, called “A Hole in the World” was really eye-opening to me. Stearns opens up the statistics of how many people die each day. Did you know that 26,500 children die of preventable causes every day? That would be equivalent to about 100 jetliners crashing, killing all the passengers in one day. The problem is, we read a statistic like that and barely pause. What if one of those children was dying on your doorstep? Wouldn’t you drop everything and rush them to an emergency room to see that their life was saved? How come we virtually ignore the thousands of children dying every day simply because they’re not on our doorstep?

Stearns then unpacks some of the issues plaguing our world today such as hunger, thirst, malaria, tuberculosis, HIV and AIDS, illiteracy, slavery, and war. One thing that struck me is the devastating cycles of poverty. People become sick due to poor water and hygiene practices. They are unable to work due to their illnesses. Obviously if they don’t work, they don’t have income. Because of that they can’t afford medication, which keeps them in that cycle.

The fourth part of the book is called “The Hole in the Church.” Here Stearns goes back to scripture and unpacks just a few of the many passages dealing with helping the poor as a reflection of our salvation in Christ. James 1:27 says, Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” And this verse is just one of many where we are commanded to look after those in distress!

We as Americans are far too obsessed with pursuing the American dream, and we turn a deaf ear to those who are crying out for help. Matthew 25:41-45 says, Then He will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’ They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’”

The final part of the book talks about repairing this hole we have created in the gospel, a hole that was never intended to be there. We are commanded to use whatever time, talents, and treasures God has blessed us with for HIS glory by living out the ENTIRE gospel. There is a world out there that needs physical and spiritual help. What are you going to do about it?

"Hazardous Journeys" Mountain Rendezvous, conclusion

~Posted by Big Mouth (apologies for the length of this post) J.

Day 5

This morning my dad and I enjoyed sleeping in because of our early wake up the day before. We were sad to be leaving camp but happy and excited for the neat things we would be doing that day.

We enjoyed a good breakfast, making sure to leave thank you notes for the ladies serving us since they did so with such a servant’s attitude and for no pay at all.

We attended a final Church Service. It is always such a joy to worship with fellow brothers (and a few sisters) in Christ!

After church we ate lunch with an interesting gentleman who had ridden his Harley to this conference in Colorado all the way from Washington! That’s quite a haul!

We were sad to see the conference come to a close. We had so much fun while being so inspired by being with fellow men of God who have many of the same beliefs and values that our family sees as top priorities.

A sorrowful goodbye

AIR FORCE ACADEMY

After the leaving the camp my dad and I drove down to Colorado Springs for a tour of the USAFA!

The academy from a distance. Aren’t the surroundings beautiful?!

The class of 2016 had just arrived there a few weeks prior and in celebration of Labor Day, the Academy allows the parents of freshmen to visit. So it was a little busy, but not too many people.

We started out by looking at some of the outdoor athletic facilities. This is their running track.

The USAFA’s HUGE gift shop. You could have a whole house decked out in USAF decor!

The towering Air Force chapel.

The inside of the Christian-Protestant section of the chapel.

The amazing Pipe Organ inside the chapel.

The main stage in the chapel.

The inside of the Catholic worship center of the chapel.

Sorry for the blur….but this is the inside of the Jewish chapel.

The Buddhist worship center. Please remove your shoes!!!

“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands.

-Acts 17:24 (NIV)

I would have been intrigued to see the Muslim worship center. But apparently the Air Force makes them worship in the chapel basement and it’s not open for visitors.

The motto of the US Air Force. “We will not lie, steal, or cheat nor tolerate among us anyone who does”

A chunk of metal from the WTC in between two concrete posts.

One of their toys. J

The indoor track. On the wall that is out of sight are the words of the USAF athletic motto; “Beat Army, Sink Navy.”

‘Reckon’ I wouldn’t want to run into him in the dark!'

The inside of the USAFA football field. This field was quite fortunate; a large fire that happened a while back came within ½ mile of this place!

Ready to hit the road! J

The Front of the “Diamond Lil” a B-52 bomber credited with a MIG kill during Vietnam.

Don’t mess with the Air Force!

PIKES PEAK

Colorado has over 54 mountain peaks that exceed 14,000 feet! We had the opportunity to visit the highest one: Pikes Peak. We rode the cog railway up.

So this is how those trains go up those steep inclines!

Would you believe somebody lives half-way up there?! That’s a long haul to the grocery store!

This part was called “Inspiration Point.” It is called this because years ago, a lady by the name of Katherine Lee Bates was riding a buggy up to the peak and stopped here because of the beauty. It was here where she was inspired to write “America the Beautiful.”

Final Destination; The summit of Pikes Peak. 14,110 Ft.

Father and son at the “top of the world.”

Seeking shelter from the wind.

I’ve really enjoyed this week with my favorite dad! I’m very thankful for the wonderful time we shared and all the memories that were made!
