One year ago today, my Grandma became a
citizen of heaven. We are so grateful for the time we were blessed to have her
here on earth, but we couldn’t be more comforted knowing she is free from her
pain and rejoicing before the throne of God. We miss you and love you, Grandma!
“But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31

Aviation Memories
~ posted by Ben
When
I was about 5 years old, my father got his private pilot’s license. A lot of
Dads spend their time with their sons hunting, fishing, or doing projects in
the garage. And although those are all great hobbies, as a kid I always thought
my dad had the best hobby of all! J I loved going up
with him in his Cessna 172. I got to know a lot about how a small plane runs,
takeoff procedures, and plane maintenance.
I
had the pleasure of getting to know the men in Dad’s flying club: Mr. Richard,
Mr. Bert, Mr. Ken, and later Dr. James. I also got to know Dad’s flying
instructor, Mr. Decker, an aerobatics flyer in the local annual air show. Speaking
of the annual airshow, that’s another thing my sister and I accompanied Dad to.
Although it was small, it was still a lot of fun! Dad also took me to
the Kalamazoo Air Zoo several times and to the US Air Force Museum in Dayton
OH.
Of
all the Aviation activities I experienced, nothing beat simply flying with Dad.
I remember when I was 6 or 7, we were flying along, when all of a sudden he let
go of the controls, looked at me, and said “she’s your plane.” I quickly
grabbed the controls and flew with butterflies in my stomach until he took
over! J I used to enjoy it when my dad would do “ups
and downs” in the plane. When the plane goes steeply down, you get a floating
sensation in your stomach and even begin to float off your seat slightly. Then
when you pull back up, you feel like a 200-pound man is sitting in your lap.
As
a little kid I begged my dad to do ups and downs, and would laugh in enjoyment
when he would! Then all of a sudden, for reasons I myself never knew, I
developed a distaste for that. I don’t know if it was a bad dream or what, but
from then on I would wail for my Dad to stop the “ups and downs.” But I still
enjoyed flying with him.
Here
in Texas, my dad has yet to join a flying club. But when he does, I will look
forward to more memories made in the sky with my favorite Dad!

When Weather Changes Your Sunday
Last Sunday morning started quite early for
me. I was up at 5:30 a.m. because I needed to be at church for worship team
practice. We had learned the night before that there would be some bad weather,
but things seemed fine for me to go ahead. Ben went with me, just in case I
needed a man’s help. J
We made it to church just fine. But just as
we were about to start rehearsal, my cell phone rang. It was Dad. The weather
had turned worse at home, and he was afraid we wouldn’t make it back home if we
stayed through service. So we hurriedly had to apologize to our worship Pastor,
and then head straight home.
Although I was disappointed that I couldn’t
play, the decision to come home was wise. The freezing rain and snow just got
worse as the afternoon wore on.

Ice,
ice, ice.
|
It’s
snowing!
|
We
stayed home with my Aunt Debbie and had fun playing “Settlers of Catan” in
front of the fire instead!
|
We had our own little church service at home,
studying a few passages in the book of Joshua and singing some songs with the
piano and guitar.
Later that afternoon, our attention turned
towards preparing food for the Super Bowl!
Our
spread! This year it included barbeque chicken wings, pepperoni bread (recipe
coming soon!), Texas
caviar with chips, stuffed
meatloaf balls, bacon
cheese puffs, fruit, raw veggies, apples with caramel dip
sweet tea, juice, milk, Coca
Cola Cake, and chocolate chip cookies!
|
We had lots of fun watching the game
together. Despite the fact that our plans got changed, we still had an
enjoyable day!

The Aquarium
Last Saturday, we had fun taking Aunt Debbie
on an excursion. We headed to Dallas to visit the Dallas World Aquarium for the
afternoon!
Dallas
always overwhelms me. Call me crazy, but scenes like this make me miss cows.
:-P
|
The
aquarium includes a lot more than aquatic creatures. It’s almost like a whole
indoor zoo!
|
Josiah
had fun feeding some blueberries to the tropical birds.
|
This
sloth was the center of attention, because he was alert and looking at
everyone.
|
The
colorful anemones are some of my favorite things to look at . . .
|
.
. . as well as all the tropical fish.

A Day in Town
On Friday, we took my Aunt out to show her
around our little town. This is one of our favorite things to do when we have
out-of-town company. J
Small town pride!
Our
first stop was actually at our neighbor/piano teacher’s house. We had to drop
off a check for her, but we also stopped to admire the baby goats she had out!
|
Then
it was off to the soda fountain for lunch! I had never eaten lunch there
before, so I was excited to experience something new.
|
My
sandwich was delicious!
|
The
boys at the restaurant.
|
Afterwards
we had to get cold treats. Of course. J
|
After our stop at the soda fountain, we parted
ways. The rest of the family went to a western store to look around while I
headed into town to do some shopping at Walmart. Later that evening, we gathered
at home for our weekly pizza/movie night. It was yet another fun day for us,
outside of our normal routine!

Aunt Debbie Comes to Visit!
Last Thursday, we had a special guest from
Florida arrive: our Aunt Debbie! We hadn’t seen her in a year, and were very
excited to introduce her to Texas.
After
picking her up from the airport, we stopped at Starbucks for a snack. Texas has
been cold and icy this week, so warm drinks were appreciated. J
|
When we got home, we showed her the house and
then let her settle in. Meanwhile, we prepared dinner for that evening.
Daddy
was quite excited to see his “big sister.” J
|
We had a great evening catching up with her!
We looked forward to spending an extended weekend with her. J

Broken
There is a brand of
Christian that yearns to be blessed;
Another that longs to
be broken…and re-made.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
Psalm 51:17
