Starting Seedlings

Back at the end of April, I started seedlings indoors!

I bought little refill pots for the terrarium I used last year.
Fluffing up the dirt.

This is what I have started so far (Note: I planted 3 seeds per pot, and 3 pots per type of plant):

Beefsteak tomatoes
Chocolate Cherry tomatoes
Mixed Heirloom tomatoes
Sweet 100’s tomatoes
Rosemary
Spearmint
Sweet Basil
Thyme
Bell Peppers
Jalapeno Peppers
Cabbage
Lettuce

So far almost all the pots have sprouted except for a few of the herbs and peppers. I have already thinned the tomatoes and some of the peppers. I did learn that starting cabbage and lettuce indoors probably wasn’t the best idea. It’s just too warm for them inside. I will just start more seeds outdoors in the next few weeks when I put everything out in the garden!

I hope you will enjoy your gardening and that you will have a lot of yummy veggies come harvest time :) I cheated and bought small tomato plants this year. They are now as tall as I am and full of tomatoes! I should be able to begin picking by the middle of this week. Have any good salsa recipes?

wow! looks like your garden is rolling! we are gradually adding some plants to our garden.... back about 1 month ago, e planted spinach. Now, we are picking lots and lots of spinach.... we haven't been buying any kinds of salad greens for at least a week now.

Chocolate cherry tomatoes.... wow! I have never, ever heard of that. What is it? Does it taste like chocolate.... if so, I'm in!

Do the twins help you with the garden? I know it's always nice to have someone to work/talk with when you're out pulling weeds.

Thank you for your comment, Aunt Debbie! And I don't consider it cheating to buy plants from the nursery. :-) I do that quite often if my seedlings don't work out.

Wow! I would love to see pictures of those tomato plants! Mine never seem to grow that tall. Do you use a special fertilizer?

To answer your question, we do have a good salsa recipe that we made and ate in Mexico. I will try to email it to you this week. The only downside is that the measurements aren't exact. Daddy usually makes it, and I think it turns out a little different every time! :-)

It sounds like your garden is doing great, Lydia! I wish we were eating fresh produce right now, but I'll just have to be patient.

No, the chocolate cherry tomatoes don't taste quite like chocolate! But they are very sweet and have a purple/brown color when they are ripe. If you come over later this summer, I'll try to show them to you, and maybe you can even taste one!

The twins do help me with the garden sometimes, but they also work a lot on our other flower beds around the house.

Do you have everything in yet? We planted all our plants on Monday and are betting that it won't frost again. Everything is in the garden except for some pole beans, some broccoli, and the second plantings of peas, beans, and corn. And once again, the whole garden is full! You'll have to come see it this summer!

No, I don't have everything in yet, Technoprairie. My perennials have come up, and I plan on putting my seedlings into the ground in the next week or two. I just started clearing all the weeds out of the bed yesterday, and I will continue to turn over the soil this week.

We will have to try and stop by your house and get a garden tour this summer! I would really enjoy that.
