Pets: Mikey

After Noah died we decided that under the circumstances, it wasn’t a good idea to get a dog right away. Mom and Dad thought it would be better to wait until we kids were older and could share in the responsibilities of a new dog.

We waited and waited for many years before we finally got the ok to get a new dog. Ben did some research online looking for a young lab from a local rescue. He found a promising dog named Mikey, an 8-month-old yellow lab mix. We went out to the rescue to take a look at him. We had planned on looking at a few others, but once we met Mikey we knew he was for us! He was a very obedient dog, house-broken, knew the basic commands, didn’t bark, and had a strong desire to please.

A week or two later after he was neutered, we brought him home!

The kids were THRILLED to have a puppy in the family! Mikey has lots of energy, so it’s good that there are so many people in the family to exercise and play with him.
Although he is usually bouncing around, Mikey has his tender moments. He loves sitting on people’s laps from time to time.
Sometimes Mikey ends up in time out for bothering the cats or getting into other types of mischief. He’s very good at giving “puppy eyes” when he’s in trouble.
Lots of people have commented that he looks a lot like Marley with his red collar on. I really love his white coat with auburn-colored markings on his ears.
Mikey’s first birthday was celebrated with as much pomp and circumstance as possible despite the fact that we were moving in and out of house due to our flood. But we sang to him and gave him a special treat of ham.
As angelic as he looks at times, Mikey has definitely gotten himself into many predicaments over the short year-and-a-half that we’ve had him. He has a knack for finding mud, water, and animal scat in our backyard. You can read about one of these scrapes here.
Mikey’s favorite place to go is the kennel. He adores car rides and will jump in whenever we open the door, whether he’s supposed to go or not!

Although having a dog can be a challenge at times, he brings lots of joy to our family with his antics and personality!

I'm still amazed at his love for the kennel.

Well, believe-it-or-not, he does love the kennel Lydia! Although his most recent stay was interesting. The kennel lost power for 5 days last week! They did their best to keep the dogs cool with fans powered by generators, but they were still quite hot. Mikey came back a few pounds lighter since he hardly ate anything during those five hot days. I think he's glad to be back home!
